The Tory government is waiting for the NHS to break, so they can sell off the remains to the highest bidder. Funding hasn't matched inflation for the last decade, and this is the result. COVID is being used scapegoat, but this has been an issue since the austerity years of the Cameron/Osbourne government. There's been who knows how many leaked dossiers on the Conservatives disdain for the NHS, as it undermines their world view that public enterprise can't function; now they've kneecapped it, they can point the finger at it and claim that it was socialism's fault.

This article summarizes their manifesto well enough: https://tribunemag.co.uk/2022/05/nhs-private-healthcare-indu...

What did the Daily Mail do?

If they plan to sell of the NHS surely their polls would be non-performing, public opinion of the tory party would be in the gutter

The Daily Mail is such a rag of a tabloid that even Wikipedia has banned it as a source of information. They've made inroads into the US, where they aren't associated with the knowledge of the long and checkered history that the UK knows it for, but just a brief peruse through this and their previous controversies will give you an inkling of the damage they've caused over the years in the pursuit of selling papers and propaganda: https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/daily-mail/

As for the second point, it's not as if the Tories make a song and dance about this. They run on a traditional right wing, low-tax manifesto that is of interest to people for a number of reasons. Nowhere do they specify that they want to take down the NHS because it's too much of a burden on the governments balance book, but their voting record and past action make that plan clear as day.
