While conservative Muslims and Christians have a history of oppressing the LGBTQ+ community I think much of the reporting on this is misleading. The parents are upset about the sexually explicit nature of these books. I'm sure many wouldn't be as upset if the books were a little more PG.
The government should almost never ban the publication of books, but any school library has finite space and must decide which books are most appropriate. Parents are still free to buy for their children the books "banned" by the school library.
A significant number of parents do not want sexually explicit content in the schools. I’m not sure I agree with them but to ignore this would be silly.
At some point we need to acknowledge that these are parents and it is up to them how they will raise their kids, not the school system, or the federal government.
