Scamming customers in pursuit of "growth" or profit is the standard modus operandi of Silicon Valley (see the recent Airbnb horror story where someone didn't get what they paid for and their "insurance" didn't cover it). This is not surprising at all, and a delightful bit of schadenfreude.

Even if the company is in microservices, and there is no way they need a mile of clearance, they'll take it anyways. Their greed outsizes their Lilliputian muster.
