I can sense some degree of entitlement thinking it would be OK to vanish, not respond to calls or emails and not have consequences.

In the non-tech world and in high stress environments, I've known of employees being fired for one wrong action. eg: executive assistants, or fumbling something important. If you haven't built a reputation or strong trust - I'd be pretty livid if you weren't reachable on your phone and not receiving emails. On the flip side - he/she may be better off in another company.
