I guess GDPR and similar laws will inevitably cause profit losses for ad companies.

It was a good ride until governments caught on.

No, it was due to inflation, recession, people going outside more after covid.
It must not have impressed the markets when Google pulled the plug on Stadia either.
Markets were probably happy that Google gave up on Stadia. Wallstreet wants companies to conserve cash and reduce investments in projects that may or may not make money soon.
