narcissm.
Absolutely, social media has proven just how narcissistic the average person is. Virtue signaling was not really a thing before social media. Is it any mystery why politicians in democratic societies are becoming more and more narcissistic every year?

The specific term may have arisen post social media, but the behavior itself is as old as humanity. We used to simply call such people frauds or posers, moral crusaders or social justice warriors. Tom Wolfe described the same phenomenon in the 1970s and called it "radical chic." The New Testament has Jesus calling out hypocrites for empty, public displays of religion 2000 years ago.

All my life I’ve been moved by the struggle against oppression. This was partly the result of my parent’s decision to escape from the tyrannical Islamic Republic of Iran in the early 1980’s. Ever since, I have done my best to fight on behalf of innocent people subjected to violence. An opportunity after 9/11 allowed me to contribute to the fight against those responsible for the senseless killing of civilians.

After working for the Department of Defense and the CIA, I was inspired to write a series of espionage novels about Janusz Soltani, whose Polish mother and Iranian father immigrated to the United States to escape oppression. Through these tales of intrigue, I hope to both entertain and inform readers about terrorism, the dangers of radicalization, and the threats posed by regimes that support Islamic extremism. Unlike other stories in the spy novel genre, I explain what motivates the extremists by delving into history, ideology, and the world-view of their leaders. This is done to inspire you to conduct further research on this topic.

Yup, it's the worst possible political system, except for all the other systems that have ever been tried.
