They probably did some new features, updated UI, and.... new subscription model.
I would be fine with that, if it's a reasonable price of course. Now their software is really cheap considering the alternative options.
My guesses: Some sort of collaboration and UI focussed features to compete with Figma, maybe even an online version, probably paired with a subscription model of some sorts, and a video/animation app.

I'm quite excited for this as Affinity Designer is still one of my favorite vector editors.

A Linux version! Okay, probably not that.
My hopes are for some sort of video editor for sale, but I have a deep fear that it will be some unnecessary for-its-own-sake UI refresh of Photo.

Or the more deeply saddening outcome, of some sort of subscription service.
