I lived in the area after completion of the big dig and often commuted through the tunnel. While it may have been a boondoggle and it definitely didn't fix traffic, it makes quality of life in the city much better, both as a pedestrian and a driver. It also reconnected the north end with the rest of the city.
I remember driving on Route 128 and I-95 during the construction period. What a mess. I was stuck there well into the early morning hours trying to get north. (EDIT: Come to think of it, I think it was about a week after the tunnel collapse.)
I'm wondering if OP posted this to draw comparison to the semi recent news about the proposed east-west commuter rail in Massachusetts?
The Greenway is a lovely addition to Boston. Used to spend lunches there eating from food trucks.
