Ask HN: Do relevant results work for you?

These days every time you use a search box on a website (including HN) it sorts first by relevance. Has that ever worked for you?

I always sort by date (recent to older) first, which is why I'm asking. Why sort by a default that isn't what people want by default? But maybe it actually is what people want.
