Going ~60mph in a residential area ... because problems with the brake pedal?
(Goes on for miles! Is it really impossible to manually 'turn off the ignition'... turn off the engine ... in these cars? Do they really not sense all the dangers whipping by and de-throttle?)
While the driver appeared quick to blame the car, safety experts believe the deadly high-speed run could have been caused by the driver mistaking the brake pedal for the accelerator.
Perhaps I have a very unpopular view, but I find this higly improbable. I would rank the probable causes in order of likely probable to tin-foil-hat to be:
- [Very likely] Malfunction of the controller. If there is a black box or real time remote telemetry this could be easily verified. I would be curious if people can authenticate into their own cars API and pull down telemetry data to their cell phone real time yet.
- [Less likely] Driver suicidal. They tried to evade collision and did not target someone nor did they target a wall or pole or cliff.
- [Not likely] Driver confuses accelerator and brake peddle. This would require excessive use of mind imparing drugs and/or alcohol. This is easy to test for.
- [Tinfoil] Citizen spoke out against the wrong person and the theoretical mandated remote drive-by-wire was utilized. Similar theories apply to Anne Heche not a Tesla but same capabilities based on the Ring videos and the movie she was coincidentally producing about sex trafficking that would name names. a.k.a. working as designed, issue closed
I agree. He clearly was about to stop the car in the first frame, so he was aware of the brake. Something was done by the car right then that caused the accident. It is either the car malfunctioning or a hacker.
I don’t believe this guy could press the accelerator full throttle for so long and not realise it.
