> Where Did All the Heroes Go?

They were never there to begin with.

JFK stole Illinois, Hendrix beat all his women and Brando was screwing kids as young as 11.

Separate the art from the artist, and make sure suspension of disbelief is turned back on as soon as the movie/concert ends. Same for businessmen/politicians . Keep disbelief on at all times and don't let naive wide-eyed individuals shame you because you don't associate with a social movement or even worse isolate you because you "don't believe in Elon" , whatever the fuck that means.

By the modern definition of hero, there aren't any. There can't really be any.

I mean, there never were heroes anyway, just people who did heroic things [in addition to the other less-than-heroic things that they did] -- but having heroes requires also believing in things that one can be heroic about. Having values and virtues that can actually be expressed.

A philanthropist is an anti-hero at best.

Bill Gates gets a tax writeoff for putting his money in a foundation that he controls, depriving the US government (accountable to its people) of funding. His foundation sponsors activities in Africa, bypassing corrupt governments but also propping them up. Africans have no input into what his foundation does for them, their economies don’t develop, their governments don’t develop the ability to raise tax revenue and deliver services they want in an accountable way.

If you thought there was anything positive about SBF, you got played.

> depriving the US government of funding

He wouldn't pay tax anyway. He has too much to ever spend, and the cost basis of his assets will reset after he dies so there will be no taxation. It's better that he gives it away to useful causes than gives it all to his kids.

> their economies don’t develop

This seems overly cynical, and probably wrong. Reducing diseases and malnutrition should have a lot of impact on their economy in 20 years when the kids who otherwise would have damaged brains can mature into more healthy adults. Plus, you know, it's not all about the economy.

Maybe he can raise funds and recover with - I don't know - a music festival in (he's not going anywhere) the Bahamas! Top acts. All-inclusive, gourmet meals, luxury lodging and transportation. Private island?

Give it an exciting name - "Fyrefest" sounds catchy!

the heroes are where they've always been - working on real problems, not promoting.
