Ask HN: Is using Google Suite considered detrimental?

1 points by kathe ↗ HN
I have been using a feature-phone for 10 years and am now considering purchasing an inexpensive Android smartphone, and for the same I am thinking of attaching my only email address using my domain name to a Google Suite account. Primarily for the apps by Google (Gmail, Maps and GPay), but also for WhatsApp (all my contacts have it now and they're haranguing me about it). Are there any inherent dangers involved in it? I have a hazy memory of reading a post on HN advising against relying on a Gmail account due to Google arbitrarily locking out the subscriber.

To my knowledge, free Gmail account are those in danger of being arbitrarily locked. Google Suite, like Google one, should come with human support.

That being said, I don't think just "attaching your domain to Gmail" is worth a google subscription. All the apps you cited are available for free.

Currently, I have 7 email addresses, and now I am leaning towards maintaining only 2 email addresses, 1st for my primary communications needs (the one with my domain), and 2nd as the back-up/secondary address for communications with my domain registrar, email service provider, and other such systems.

You may call it laziness or being bratty, but, honestly, I am really tired of having more than 1 email address for my online identities.

Also, the Google Suite charges for a single mailbox are quite affordable, and given the add-on features like SPAM protection and large mailbox size, are very desirable.
