Ask HN: How have you made your money?

1 points by IndigoIncognito ↗ HN
Given this forum is comprised of older people with above average income/ wealth, how have you made your money (that isn't from a job)? Even if it only made you a measly salary what was it and what can you recommend the younger generation do to cope with this recessionary period?

I made some pretty bad quality games, published them on Google Play, also meme YouTube videos, put ads in them and after 5 years I was able to pay out whole $100.

Making business is hard.

Spent 9 years building a JavaScript library, earned about 4490 USD in total from it. Then spent 23900 USD in manufacturing a single product (quantity of 1, ran out of budget) for which I have no known client for. Built an iPhone app and made maybe 300 USD for that. Yeah business is hard.
Worked for the Man for decades. Avoided kids, choosing the dink lifestyle. Tried to balance living today with saving for tomorrow as tomorrow might not come in a desired form. Tried to maximize the employers retirement mechanisms and governmental programs for tax management. Followed Bogle. Lucked out having an economic boom when ending my career.

Manage expenses, don’t purchase a house unless you can switch jobs without moving. Understand the geographic restrictions of your and your partner’s career choice and the go/nogo for kids. Plan for any familial issues that will arise. Look at bling with a jaundiced eye.

No, you don't make money. Instead, try to play the "money" game smartly.

Life is a gamble on whatever you spend or invest. You don't make any money.

Gradually and then suddenly.
The real question is how have you lost it?
