I suspect Bret will be tapped as CEO of Twitter. This announcement is too strange given he was being groomed for the salesforce CEO role. In addition Musk has said he does not want the CEO position at Twitter. Lastly Bret being chairman of the board at twitter was a cool character and was unflappable at best while dealing with all turmoil during the acquisition. Expect this announcement in the next week or so.

I have nothing to back this up, but I can’t see Elon and Bret being friends or even close at all after the Twitter debacles this year.

Bret will likely start another company as he’s always been more of a start up person.

There is that angle also, its unusual as he was set to be sole CEO at salesforce, maybe you are right as he wants to start a company from scratch. Musk has said he has a CEO for Twitter so I'm just putting two and two together. I could be way off base also :)

He did tell the press "After a lot of reflection, I’ve decided to return to my entrepreneurial roots." Would be odd saying that if the plan was to CEO Twitter.
