Ok. ChatGPT showed most of us, average devs, are fucked up. What should we be doing to not lose our jobs in short/mid term?

It is already to late.

Before it was journalists getting replaced by GPT3, then Digital artists, Stable Diffusion and DALL-E, and now developers getting overtaken by ChatGPT, with sites like Stackoverflow being the first to fall.

Like journalists having to learn to code, digital artists learning paint, devs must learn to adapt.

How?

Can the machine translate requirements to code? Can the machine actively maintain 100K / 1M / 10M code base? Can the machine even understand multithreaded code?

Let say that I want a new feature, and the machine cannot do it, what now? Are you going to reverse engineer your new code base by human? What happen if human introduce a bug during a bug fix? Who will fix it? The machine?

Are you a programmer?

Nobody get replaced by GPT3. Its like stock photo site.

Did commercial photography got affected by stock photos'? Did it replaced anybody?

It has started replacing concept artists, or at least some of their work. I know a friend that works in industrial design, and he's been using A.I. for different shoe design concepts (that he's putting into production as well). Said he can get a dozen in minutes for almost no cost as opposed to getting the same after weeks and $10k+ to hire an artist.

But these things still struggle with providing multiple pieces of art with the consistent style. Like I'm not going to get a consistent UI and game art for the game I'm designing anytime soon, and I struggled to get similar enough art for different cards for a card game design of mine. So I think it has a ways to go before it starts seriously replacing artists.

But that might not be too far away anymore.

You aren't losing your job short-to-mid term. Long term - it's so hard to predict that it's pointless to give advice so do whatever you like.
