Didn't they threaten the same with Australia?
Yep, exact same threat, yawn!

Though it truth I think the news publishers benefit a lot from the search engines and social media. A number of years ago Google excluded a couple news sites that complained loudly and filed lawsuits - after a couple months they were begging to be indexed again. If it were me I'd grant the news organizations their wish then make them pay every time someone read one of their news articles.

Please do. I have no issues going to a more news specific platform
OK by me--I had no intention of reading news in the metaverse anyway.
> publishers and broadcasters put their content on our platform themselves because it benefits their bottom line — not the other way around

They benefit from engagement because Facebook/Meta otherwise monetizes copyright theft without giving them a cut, right?

Something needs to be done to monetize journalism online that doesn't depend on ads. I know that people are generally not willing to pay for subscriptions, or at least I am not, when the sources are so numerous. If there were a single 'news' portal such as netflix was for films and tv, where we could pay a monthly fee and get access to quality journalism from different markets -- this would be something I would pay for happily.
Something needs to be done? Why?
I've got a feeling that even if there was a central portal, most people wouldn't want to pay.

Most people don't like news. They read it because they have nothing else to do.

Why? If every news organization in the country shutdown tomorrow very few people would care, and a lot of us might even be thankful for the reduction in noise.

You can argue that journalism has a role to play when it comes to keeping tabs on government and business and generally keeping us informed, however the industry hasn't been playing that role for least 10-20 years now, so what does it matter if they disappear?

Works for me.

I just want the community-based group.
