I hope that isn't true, because that would be astonishingly embarrassing. That's 20x large hadron colliders, or 100x FRIBs, or 10x james webb space telescopes, or 3x Manhattan projects, or 10x gemini programs.
It's true they developed a processor architecture, but they aren't even responsible for the fab. The total equity of TSMC is like 80 billion. It just makes no sense.
Honestly this makes sense from a timeline perspective. Chip manufacturing and research is incredibly expensive (Intel spent 13 billion+ in 2018 on R&D, which was more than Apple that year), and Apple's jump in spending occurred shortly before M1 macs entered the scene. Obviously they have very different product lines but the switch away from x86 must have been unbelievably expensive
