My goodness how the mighty Economist has fallen. This personal gripe over defence spending in Ukraine is puffed-up into a generalised, grandiose claim about how the continent that delivered the industrial revolution and modernity to the world is "not pulling its weight". Opinionated gutter journalism, well below my expectations of The Economist.

Looking at wikipedia by % GDP PPP standards Sweden, Germany, and Austria spend more than the US on R&D*

Being Australian though we seem pretty low.
