Well it never ended - there was never any formal declaration of an end to hostilities in the Chinese Civil War, and the governments on either side of the strait both constitutionally do not recognise the other, instead seeing themselves as the rightful government of all of China. These are legal facts, the omission of which is reframing of the narrative, building the case for a future US intervention.
it's a civil war, which the US ensured would not be resolved, firstly by helping transport Chiang to Taiwan in 1949, and therefore ensuring continuation of conflict. In US interests to at least avoid reunification, probably now in US interest for hot war to break out
China wants to be world hegemon by 2049. That's no secret. They've been very clear about it. They picked 2049 because that will be the 100th anniversary of the CCP's rule of China. Everything China does is aimed at that.
And what kind of hegemon would China be if it allowed Taiwan to defy its will. China's ego is too fragile to tolerate that.
Xi Jinping wants to be the one what got Taiwan (just as Putin wanted to be the one what got Ukraine). He is 69 years old. As he gets older he will agitate to get it done. He will lose patience with the long term effort at destabilization of Taiwan and he will go to war.
And/or a threat to his or the CCP's power, which is their first and foremost concern.
thinkmcfly might as well ask why WWI started when it predictably going to impoverish the major combatants. Saw a factoid some time ago that world trade did not return to the prewar level until a long time after WWII.
We could also Goodwin this and ask why did Hitler take the fatal step of seizing half of Poland. There age is also a possible motivation, he was 50 in the pre-antibiotic and much of modern medicine era.
I phrased my question to mirror another person's question but with the opposite bias; they created a anti-taiwan response opportunity, so I made my post with a pro-taiwan response opportunity.
I believe Taiwan should remain free if that is what they want for themselves

[ 5.9 ms ] story [ 32.5 ms ] threadBy the way, if there's actually a war, the Great Depression would be tame in comparison.
Is the whole 'US intervention bad' propaganda line being pushed just smoke?
