Yeah this is self inflicted. Mastodon is not a serious threat to Twitter, but blocking it makes it seem like it is. Is there an official explanation from Twitter?

Just run your own Mastodon instance or hop onto new one, that's not blocked. They cannot block them all. That's the best feature of Fediverse.
