Namecheap changes the price after adding it to the cart
.space? Don't buy from any tld that hasn't been around since the 2000s.
They can't (or don't want to) iterate every possible premium domain in advance, so they run the algorithm on domains that get added to the cart.

You're lucky you didn't register it at the regular price and start to build a brand for yourself that you find out a year later is considered premium. So the domain is then held hostage for that $3000.

It feels like this practice is becoming more common across the web in general.

I'm not sure which I'd prefer - not showing a price before putting in cart, or changing the price after putting in cart.

EU regulations require the final price to be displayed. Eventually they'll take notice.
Use another registrar. Do it quick, as it may get parked.
