As foreigners they were of course particularly suspicious in Stalin’s paranoid purges, and most ended up dead or in Siberia.
After WWII everyone in the West pretty much understood the Stalinist reality and not even the staunchest Soviet apologists would actually want to move there.

Leaving aside the hypocrisy angle of mastodon et Al. This is opinion dressed in the language of facts. Loads of places have contracts like "if you leave early you have to pay us back". Running your society like that is a political choice. The Chinese government would probably say the society that poaches doctors from poor communities is the bad one.
