When should one give up then? Should one be relentless and a "Cleaner" to get the job done no matter how?
I'm a parent and have never told my kid that hard work always pays off. Instead, we've emphasized that working hard is usually necessary, but not sufficient, for success. Some things will always remain beyond your control, so the key is to control what you can and get sufficient shots on goal. Do it consistently over time and eventually enough of the things you can't control will go your way.

I always thought this was inherently obvious advice...
