Ask HN: In-depth sites for various industries' news?

161 points by gilbetron ↗ HN
During the ship-stuck-in-the-canal days, I was introduced to freightwaves.com, and another HN post along the line introduced me to mining.com. What are some interesting, in-depth sites similar to those but for other industries? Like for solar, wind, and nuclear, for instance? I can google them, but I like hearing recommendations from people that are in the industry!

Automotive News for... automotive news: https://www.autonews.com/
For more irreverent/surreal/humorous takes on the auto industry, I can recommend The Autopian, a venture started by former Jalopnik writers:

https://www.theautopian.com/

(Jalopnik was sort of the original irreverent/surreal/humorous auto blog but it hasn't faired well in the various changes of hands for Gawker)

I know of https://autonews.io/ mentioned before. They look unrelated but would you know of any connection except for their similar domain?
Financial reports and news of companies and stocks (mostly US, I think), focusing on values and fundamentals. I found other similar sites to be too much about short term trends and technical analysis.

To follow up with a more specific question,

Anyone know a good industry news site for Supply Chain related news?

I’ve been trying to understand how the global supply chain works better, the reasons it’s still pretty jacked up, and most importantly, what is currently being done about it

The Odd Lots podcast is great for this. They cover a number of different finance/economics related topics, but they've done some great deep dives into supply chain stuff - they've had the head of Flexport, the guy who runs the Port of LA, a long-haul trucker and a whole host of other folks. Just scroll through their list of old episodes until you see supply-chain related ones.

In optics:

Laser Focus World by Endeavour Media, the company also offers paid market studies. https://www.laserfocusworld.com

Photonics Media, also have great webinars. https://www.photonics.com

Photonics Focus, the magazine of SPIE, freely downloadable. https://spie.org/news/photonics-focus/novdec-2022

Optics and Photonics News (OPN) by Optica (formerly OSA) https://www.optica-opn.org/home/

There are many others but these are the biggest ones that I read and are not too specific to any one application or industry.

American Federation of Musicians: https://www.afm.org/

Unionized musicians that work most Broadway-style shows, orchestras, operas and professional recording operations (jingles, film, etc…)

The sources below are almost entirely submarine articles, but that's how trends arise. Remember hearing about ransomware attacks in the news? That was a purposeful choice a group of Cybersecurity companies chose to begin drumming up from 2019 onwards.

Govt Specific:

Government Tech Acquisition - https://www.nextgov.com/

GSA Specific - https://www.govexec.com/

DoD Policy and Acquisition - https://www.defenseone.com/

SLED Acquisition - https://www.route-fifty.com/

Hill specific stuff (ignore Magazine, Opinion, and Personal Profile articles, those are all submarine articles) - https://www.politico.com/

Cybersecurity Industry:

DarkReading (almost entirely submarine articles, but a good way to get a pulse on upcoming cybersecurity trends) - https://www.darkreading.com/

SDxCentral (same as darkreading, but better brand) - https://www.sdxcentral.com/

Media/News:

Poynter - https://www.poynter.org/

Columbia Journalism Review - https://www.cjr.org/

If I'm not mistaken CJR also has a podcast that I remembered liking more than the NYT or WSJ podcasts coming out at the same time (last I listened to it was 4 years ago, not sure about how good it is now).
Ooooo, I gotta check that out. I've never really been much of a podcast kinda guy, but given the CJR's quality, I'd trust it's pretty good as well!
