> last night, i took the 24 books i want to read in 2023, added up all the pages, and found that if i read 20 pages a day, i'll get through them all.
tyranny of the averages. no, you may not. some nights you may be able to read & digest only a paragraph. other nights, several chapters. if you’re consistently reading 20/night, i'd suggest one of two things: (1) adopt a learning instead of reading attitude, that way you’re able to spend time contemplating every sentence, paragraph, &c. or (2) change some titles in the set. perhaps mix several genres?
In my experience, the commitment to read every day is more important than how much. If I’m in a spacey mood, I can still power through a page in a meaningful way. Plus, sometimes I’ll get momentum from that and then the next few pages will pull me in.
Best takeaway IMHO: "... writing begets writing ..."
I've read elsewhere, and I'm finding it to be true, that action creates motivation which leads to more action and results. if there is something you want to do, start doing it, the sooner the better.
I love this. Although if I sat down and started handwriting this article—as the author did—I would make it to the second sentence where the word “percolating” is, and I’d have to pull out my phone to double check the spelling.
