The Solstice was December 21st, Perihelion is January 4th, and between them they neatly cover the usual holiday period.

Lay-astronomer and budding neo-pagan here. Is it just coincidence that these two points are relatively close in the yearly orbit or are they related to physically?
Temporary coincidence. The perihelion dates drift a week or two every thousand years.
