I think you have it backwards in your last paragraph. Five years ago Elon Musk had a lot of goodwill and was highly thought of by lots of people. Through his actions as a boss and through his public statements he’s shown himself to be a jackass. There is a cadre of supporters who forgive or overlook the overwhelming evidence of his jackassery. Perhaps you should consider the possibility that you are among this cadre of supporters.
I don’t know who Brown is and it’s quite possible he/she too is a jackass but that doesn’t detract from the fact that Elon Musk is a shitty person.

No. Every boss who says "total rewrite" deserves the correspective of a punch in the face. It's like saying: what you engineers have done and I paid 44 billion dollars for, is worth nothing at all. It's worse than s* because at least that can be used at fuel. Musk is the jerk 100%
i dunno.. as an engineer, with every project i've jumped into, among of the first ideas to tackle code rot was usually a total rewrite of some key parts, agreed upon by all the other external engineers.. is it usually a good/practical idea? probably not, but if you have a huge piece of organically grown garbage, taking few steps back and entertaining the thought "how would we do it now, knowing what we know now (and what all these people have learned the hard way)", does not sound like the worst of ideas.
you're familiar with tech debt, right? what if a board of engineers and not your supervillain says a rewrite is one of the things we can try to breathe some life into this
