As someone who believes in the scientific method, the connection to a Twitter following and whether or not that has anything at all with science or just the regular day to day world is irrelevant. There is an actual discovery process to identifying someone as an expert and I think the main take away here is that scientific merits matter less than preaching about your accomplishments.
