I worked with a guy who used baby sign with all his babies. He swears by it because the baby is more able to specify what it is they want, instead of crying while you try 5 things before giving them the thing they want.

His kids grew up smart, which he attributes to baby sign. But both parents are techies, so it's probably more that. Either way, the ability to communicate more directly instead of playing the guessing game every time there's a tear and a wail is a blessing.
