Do these paywalls really work? I either click the comment with the link to bypass it or just skip the article all together.
Some people value information and are willing to pay for reliable news.

I’m sure the pool of people willing to pay $100/month for a single website is pretty small, though.

it’s $40 per month or $375 per year. i’ve been a paid subscriber for years now. for me it’s totally worth it.
I see “$1 trial then $95 per month”. Perhaps it’s different if you sign up directly.
Some work better than others, but it’s also worth noting that paywalls make exceptions for some referrers to either bypass or reduce their defenses, and sometimes the exceptions include HN in the Referer header or certain URL parameters intended to extend access to share recipients.
Isn't Vietnam also a single-party authoritarian regime? This doesn't seem much better than building in China.
I was in Vietnam week ago, the country didn't feel like authoritarian regime, at least regime there is not as authoritarian like Canada or Australia.
Better to be diversified between different authoritarian regimes then to be totally dependent on one.
