The windows do not have to be the glazed variety.

I once had lunch with someone in whose group I had summer interned as an undergrad, and he had occasion to complain that in the meantime he had been kicked upstairs (to write "strategy" white papers for distribution back in $HOME_COUNTRY). When I pointed out that we were in Silicon Valley, and he could surely find a new post with responsibilities, probably even just by asking loudly in this very restaurant, he looked at me in horror, and replied, sure, there are many other companies here — but they're all American, so which among them would even dream of giving him two months paid vacation?

(IIRC, he gained another two weeks every five years...)
