While I agree, I also think that author is conflating two separate topics: visual thinkers and hands-on learning.
You can have hands-on learning that is both symbolic - "write a parser", and visual - "make a clay pot".
I'm more of a symbolic thinker/learner, and I actually feel that society largely fails me because everything is visual and mouse-based - pointing, clicking, dragging, scrolling - except Emacs ;)
