Ask HN: Alternative to slack for cross-company communication?

I often find myself in long email threads with customers. Is there any tool that I can use as an alternative? I've seen companies use slack and invite other companies to slack. Slack is good, but many customers don't use it and requires both customers to be paid for this feature.
