I have found that DEI efforts tend to recommend "hire more DEI staff" frequently, but otherwise accomplish little or nothing towards their stated objectives.
I thought it was well-established that Diversity Training was useless at best for actually promoting diversity, acceptance, etc...but was extremely effective, as a corporate legal defense strategy, if you were later hit with any discrimination lawsuits.

OTOH, the article is a NYT guest editorial, and MLK Day was Monday. Pretty plausible that nobody at the table sees an upside to just laying out the dreary facts.
