TIL: there is 'old PEMDAS' and 'modern PEMDAS' ...

The 2 things I found really interesting about this is:

  1. They give vastly different interpretations
  2. 'Modern' PEMDAS really appears to be a result of making it easier for calculators, programs, etc. to parse equations.
Does anyone know of any other instances like this, where long time, well known 'human' processes were changed to make it easier to 'automate' ? I don't mean stuff like moving from paper forms to electronic (eg EDI) but more that the core meaning was changed (eg PEMDAS) ?

EDIT: oh! Julia notebooks were the only system I found that seems to use the 'old' version. Wolfram Alpha and Google Search appear to use the 'Modern PEMDAS'

Correction: Wolfram Alpha seems to use 'new style' if you use the 'Natural language' input, if you use 'math input', it sets it up as an 'old style' equation.
Old PEMDAS was BEDMAS.
I didn't realize that was the official name..I just thought it was a region thing.
I certainly learned the "old" version as PEMDAS.
