Ask HN: Best Printer for less than $100?

I want a printer with USB support that doesn't refuse to print when my instant ink subscription runs out.

Any suggestions? HP has forever lost my trust.

Samsung ML-1915 for example.
I've got a black and white brother laser printer that I've had for years now and it's awesome. I would never buy an inkjet printer for home use again. If I want photos, I'll get them printed at a photoshop.
A new Brother laser lists at $120 and toner is about $40-60. I went the LaserJet 4xxx route and am into it for about $400 after repairs and toner. The DRM is very minimal, however aftermarket cartridges have never given me particularly good results.

While the HP is just that much better at dithering, at your price point it's hard to ignore a new Brother (except for the issue of creating additional waste, etc).

Just to add to the chorus, Brother is the only consumer printer brand I’ve used that isn’t complete and absolute garbage.
