It looks like the companies laying people off were the ones wanting staff back at the office.
I was laid off, along with many of my remote coworkers, and coworkers in satellite offices. The CTO was internally heard saying that he believed remote does not work for eng.
I am sorry to hear this. I hope things pick up soon again.

Anecdotally, in my neck of the woods, boss started taking 'attendance' and 'someone' complained about leaving early before everyone else. I guess recession is in full swing since employers are embracing all shitty behavior again.

Acknowledging that I don’t know the business or context, “remote does not work for eng” is a bad take.
I doubt we could know easily. http://layoffs.fyi shares the layoffs announced by companies, often with little data on what kinds of roles were impacted.

You could also make the argument that layoffs could target “in office” folks in expensive areas in preference for remote folks that could be paid less elsewhere.
