PhDs in science STEM are a huge opportunity cost and basically a scam for cheap labor. Those who do it are either naive or have been hoodwinked by propaganda (like the reddit poster), intrinsically passionate about the subject knowing full well of the exploitive nature of the system, or social climbers who want to be essentially science influencers on youtube/twitter/podcasts.
