I’m guessing when slavery was abolished you could find some white people who weren’t “political” but now didn’t have access to free labour and so had a hard time making ends meet on their plantation.

Indeed. Pol Pot and Mao broke a lot of eggs, too. They just weren't as openly racist as D.I.E. ideologues.
I have plenty of first hand experience navigating this stuff in the Canadian arts grant system.
