SEEKING WORK | REMOTE WORLDWIDE | Based in the UK & France

The DevOps Guru - Consulting, Training, Mentoring

I design & build anti-fragile, reliable sysadmin / SRE/ DevOps stuff; anything from Python monitoring scripts to cloud-based infrastructure design and implementations.

I usually work with customers who have urgent operational needs that require an immediate short-term (1-5 days) engagement.

I also provide mentoring and training services for clients who want to productionalise their DevOps implementations to achieve better reliability, stability, scalability and automation of their projects.

My expertise is based on 30 years of hands-on technical experience in all areas of IT, but particularly in architecting, building and managing data-driven enterprise platforms.

Recent examples of my work:

  - Organisational-level DevOps tooling and security implementations
  - Global Azure infrastructure deployment, management and security (Terraform, DevOps, KMS, AppGw)
  - Python-based SRE scripting for monitoring custom federated clusters using Consul, Vault, Nomad
  - Productionalising Kafka and Confluent clusters (SSL, SASL, ACLs, Debezium)
  - Tracking down performance bottlenecks in Elasticsearch and Solr
  - Stabilisation of complex Java-based containerised applications
  - Validation of greenfield project designs
  - Single-pane-of-glass dashboard design in Datadog, Splunk and Azure
  - Deploying a global, multi-cloud, Kubernetes-based PaaS (AWS and Azure)

I help startups with the UX/UI and web design of their products. This includes web apps, websites, landing pages, screenshots and copywriting, and I can assist with some frontend development where needed. My background as a startup founder and full stack developer helps me create practical design solutions that balance usability, aesthetics, development effort and performance. I work to fixed price quotes when projects are self-contained.

---

The best live example of my work is Checkbot (https://www.checkbot.io/), a browser extension that tests websites for SEO, speed and performance problems. The entire project is my own work including coding the extension itself, UX/UI design, website design (the homepage is optimised to load in 0.7 seconds, 0.3MB data transferred), website copy, and website articles on web best practices.

I have a PhD in operations research---essentially, I solve optimization problems. You can give me a real-world problem and I can translate it into a mathematical model that can be solved (often optimally) via integer programming, constraint programming, or other methods.

I'm currently working on a column generation-based daily fantasy sports (DFS) solver as a personal project. Taking as input the predictions/requirements of the user, this solver can generate optimal lineups for multi-entry tourneys. It is, as far as I am aware, the only DFS solver that can generate provably optimal sets of lineups for multi-entry DFS tourneys.

SEEKING WORK - Contract, Remote, based in NYC area, backend engineer

I am a backend expert, having built and maintained highly available systems for several companies over the last 5 years, in addition to over 20 total years of software development experience.

The ideal engagement at this point would be with a firm that expects to need team-level help and wants to try me out as the lead for that on a smaller initial project.

You will like working with me because I:

* hold your goals as my priorities

* communicate verbosely yet synthesize well

* my rates are reasonable in exchange for the value I deliver

* I guarantee I will get the job done

Concrete examples:

* built realtime stats and the enterprise-wide developer portal for one of the top 3 major US sports leagues (golang/pyspark/docker/azure)

* portfolio management process replatforming for a midsize hedge fund (bespoke->dockerized python aws lambda architecture)

* built a ~50 node, Dockerized, Terraform-deployed distributed system to provide realtime, transformed trade data from crypto exchanges to a Kafka pipeline and data lake (fodder for an analytics platform). Met 5000msec SLA across arbitrarily many exchanges and ticker symbols. Blue-green deployment for complete CICD safety. Cloudwatch metrics proved SLA was met and provided general system oversight.

* built a framework to collapse dozens of singleton ETL programs into one config-driven, simple C# application performing the same functionality at ~80% reduction in maintenance cost year over year.

* built and managed a team of 8 engineers operating against multiple streams of work to meet business needs, with ~12 active projects at a time.

SEEKING WORK - Freelance/Contract - Remote from US

I'm a former technical founder who likes to jump into deep, ambiguous problems. As a solo person I can scope, design, and build end-to-end products.

In the last few months, I've helped:

1. An idea-stage startup build an prototype with OpenAI that went on to close a large seed round + build out their team

2. Build a reinforcement learning platform for a government contractor to help them backtest + measure ML model performance in production to improve overall accuracy

3. Prototyped a shift swapping tool for a healthcare facility

I've worked in a variety of web stacks ranging including Next.js, Rails, Vue, Go, Laravel, and Kubernetes. I'm an advanced user of Stripe, including their Connect product for marketplaces.

SEEKING WORK | San Francisco, CA, USA | Remote OK

I can take on dev work using Python or Java with a focus on API and am capable of non-SPA frontends such as for internal tooling or proofs of concept. I can also fill in for some product management and tech lead duties, will explain a little of my experience below:

Python skills are modern with Flask, and Java skills are a bit outdated back to version 8 with Protocol Buffers and Kafka. I can also do Clojure on top of JVM and would be happy to get back into it, but the last time I used it was in about 2015 and it was for a work project. I'm deeply familiar with HTTP and have used HAproxy some and Nginx quite a bit, familiar with sticky routing and load balancing concerns. I've built a high volume, low latency data pipeline from the ground up, integrated with a production pipeline.

Frontend skills date back to pre-Bootstrap vanilla CSS, and I do refresh myself every couple years... presently refreshing Bootstrap 5 and Flex layouts; far from a pro, just saying where I'm at. Javascript and platform API knowledge is very strong, I just don't have working experience with modern frameworks and would need ramp up time.

DevOps skills are pretty good, with focus on 12 Factor App style. My history of running Linux goes back to the early 2000s with Apache/PHP/MySQL/Drupal stacks up to today with RasPi and Cloud instances. I can use raw operating systems with Ansible-like tools and also have experience with Docker and Kube including writing Helm charts.

I'm also familiar with some online marketplaces and e-commerce stacks like Shopify, Gumroad, Fiverr, and Rapid API so I can fill in gaps with those duties as well, and advise on monetization strategies for SaaS. I've done endless API integrations with many e-commerce and social media stacks, so that's a strong point that I can help with.

I could probably make my way into a first-time Dev Manager or Director role for the right team and have received such proposals in the past, but am presently focused on personal goals and happy to come in for assignments that I can knock out and automate or document and hand off.

Ideal first project length would be something like 2 weeks, and I prefer fixed pricing to hourly pay for dev work and day rates for consulting.

Email is biz@harlanji.com if you want to connect.

Thanks for reading.

I am a CPA (former auditor!) who is now a developer, working as a consultant for two firms. One of the projects I'm involved with now is winding down and I will have about 10 hours a week open starting in the next few weeks.

Right now my main role is working at a large finance company transforming their business processes with code, and sitting between the accounting department and developers to try and move things in a sensible direction. I'm part project manager part business analyst.

I'm looking to get involved in some interesting work where my skills might be of use. I currently code mostly in an in-house functional language the firm developed based on D, but I'm adept with python as well. I've built internal tools, such as a library for automating financial reporting, some basic CRUD web interfaces for managing data, I built a REST API to serve up some finance data for the rest of the firm, etc.

Here's the sort of things I might be able to help out with:

- I can speak both the business language and the tech language. I can help manage and lead projects while understanding the tech side of things

- Advise on improving your operations

- Typical accounting work, like month end closes, financial statements, bookkeeping, analysis, etc. (The advantage here for me would be that I'd like to automate as much as possible, where the typical accountant might not have the skills for that)

- Help put business processes and logic into code

- Make business problems go away (compliance, tax, paperwork type stuff, etc)
