Google is in decay or start of it it seems. Companies outside Google beat hands down in quality. One example in Machine translation would be deepl.com which just simply makes feel Google translate a mediocre product.

LLM train missed by a huge margin depsite owning DeepMind and having tons of inhouse experise.

Not going to talk about Stadia but overall, probably a product tier that's insulated in their own imaginary bubble (such as Meta) result in downfall of business empires.

I don't know based on the financial report they just released, they aren't decaying they are growing by 10%.

Is Google the new Facebook where everyone keep saying it's dying but the number say the exact opposite?

Google has 120b in cash, all their main products Ads, Search, YouTube, Cloud are all still growing.

Where is the decay?

Not talking about financial numbers if that's the only criteria and those gains are monetization gains. Put gmail as paid product and might post 30% growth next year.

I'm talking about product quality. Is that also improving by 10% every year? Search at least isn't.

I wonder when we will get something of chatgpts quality without all of the ideological weights and refusal to engage ChatGPT has. I assume Googles will be similar to theirs in that respect
Won’t there always be ideological weights though, depending on what you select for the training data?
Yeah, certainly. I should have specified the manual weighting they do. I wouldnt mind a bot that was trained on training data to lean left or right, but the bot just spitting out the same boilerplate paragraphs of text it was told to say anytime something political comes up gets old fast.
I think that, like with newspapers there is unavoidably a bias. Hopefully there will be a big cast of AIs with different ones.
I am ok with bias in the data. That bias can often be overridden with explicit prompts (used to be able in early versions of chat GPT).

The problem is explicitly censoring certain topics and forcing a bias that cannot be overridden by explicit prompts.

I understand the concerns about generating harmful content. But the cat is out of the bag now. We can slow it down, but we cannot put it back in. There will be models that have no censorship, it’s just a matter of time

I’ve always assumed Google has something of similar quality (give or take) to ChatGPT but hesitated to release it due to concerns about bias/ethics/fake news/spam/etc. Now that ChatGPT is getting all the press, Google feels like it’s now or never. I’m sure it will be restricted just as much, if not more, than ChatGPT.
meh pass. probably will be hobbled beyond utility for politeness, ship all of my data out the backdoor, then disappear in 2 years if that.
Announcements of future announcements are off-topic on HN.
Will it have a way for Google to sell ad space within it ? Do some product placement or SEO links ? Because that's probably priority number one for the Google brass!
