"The pilots are from North America, although it's unclear if Canada or the US"
It really grinds my gears when people say "North America" and then limit it to Canada or the US. I know it's a bit pedantic, but there are 29 countries in North America, and the biggest North American city isn't even in Canada or the USA.
>In human geography and in the English-speaking world outside the United States, particularly in Canada, "North America" and "North American" can refer to just Canada and the United States together.
For many of us that were taught geography in school it refers to those parts of the Americas that aren't South America or Central America .. ie. Mexico is a big part of that and the many small island countries figure in as well.
Until now I had no idea Trinidad and Tobago can be considered part of North America. Any lay person looking at a map would not think so. It seems like an unreasonable definition to me, one which brings more confusion than clarity.
I guess it depends in which country you were schooled. I was taught (not in the US) that North America included Canada, USA, and Mexico. Central America starts in Guatemala and Belize, South America is from Colombia and down, and all the island-nations were part of the Caribbean
FWiW parts of Western Australia are considerably more "remote" than Ravensthorpe .. but that's a relative term and it's certainly antipodean to many on HN.
