It sounds like that screen that appears not to show the private key, does actually show the private key.
No sane wallet shows private keys without an explicit action by the user to do so. Sounds like the wallet software they used was compromised somehow.
If we're speculating I'll go with a NFC 0day.
they focused way to much on the story and not on the important stuff.

there's a lot of WEs, who else had access to the device they used? what was the device being used for before? was it properly reset? what's the model and OS version?

my bet is inside job.

Yeah, it's so easy to say we got hacked while secretly giggling on the inside. It's even possible to avoid taxes and such with a purported hack.
So you're thinking it could have been an inside job at the top? If that turns out to be what happened, I'll remember this comment as you calling it.
