A small company can already hire talent, it just means they have to pay market rates for that degree of (somewhat nebulously defined) talent, or providing benefits, lifestyle, etc that nets the same total to the person you're hiring.
What you're actually saying is "this mass firing will lower everyone's income", which, TBF is the actual goal of the exercise.
My recommendation is don't let yourself be hired at Yahoo. I honestly cannot see the upside in it, especially if they're going to turn around and lay you off.
Alternatively: be unemployed, it has really great benefits!
Not every job is going to be at the Next Big Thing, or have you Change The World, or suddenly give you stock worth millions.
Would I be making plans of working at Yahoo or AOL or some such in the hope of some miracle turnaround, no, but if they were to turn around and offer me a bunch more than what I'm currently making why shouldn't I consider it?
Yahoo said the company would shift efforts to its 30-year partnership with Taboola, a digital advertising company, to satisfy ad services.
“These decisions are never easy, but we believe these changes will simplify and strengthen our advertising business for the long run, while enabling Yahoo to deliver better value to our customers and partners,” the Yahoo spokesperson said.

Hmmm that sounds like a contradiction. Taboola are the people who push those "one weird trick" ads
