"Death largely ignored"? Absolute rubbish, Much missed.
Well, at the time of his death Dennis Ritchie was a retiree who had done nothing worthwhile for a few decades. His death was, to put it bluntly, inconsequential.

Steve Jobs, on the other hand, was still the CEO of one of the most profitable and inspiring companies in the history of capitalism two months or so before his death.

Of course the media covered the latter more than the former. What did you expect?
