Ask HN: Startups that pay so little

2 points by nytesky ↗ HN
I work in a niche tech field, so don’t expect to make as much as big tech.

But startups in my industry are offering max salaries for Sr roles of $150k in SF — which qualifies for affordable housing? https://sfplanning.org/home-sf

Since so many IPO and SPAC exits left staff with little to show for it, who are they expecting with these low salaries?

The FAQ page puts Electrical Engineer at $95k/yr and 140% of area median income. With $150k you'd be at 220% of area median income. That's outside the "Who is affordable housing for" table
For a Sr role it’s not unreasonable to expect a family of 4.
I just don't know why they force people not to be remote.

You could live very well in most of the country for that.

And one big slogan for startups is get out of the office and talk to people. I would argue if you want to build something that has national appeal get out of the state.
