That’s exactly right. We, just another games and simulation studio, are implementing LLMs in several games and engines. For dialog systems, hero journeys, behavior trees and techart pipelines. Most do not even expose a chatbot to the player, LLMs are also used for game systems to chatter among themselves.
The challenge is making it fun. I'd compare it to procedural generation. There are some big success stories there, and lots of games where it just generates infinite bland content.
I think this really underrates the 15 years of work that has gone into creating interlocking systems to generate geography, civilizations, people, artifacts, emotions, poetry, &c, &c. Especially because you can see, often, what specific historical events or personal events are impacting your dwarfs frame by frame.
So on the contrary I DF is an example of how creative & human generative algorithms can be, you can't get anything as rich as DF with LLMs (currently at least, I guess)
I'm so happy those guys after years of getting by on a trickle of donations have found financial success and, more importantly, the freedom to keep working on their vision, their life's work.
This is well-deserved. I've always truggled to get through the initial super-steep learning curve, much to my disappointment. I really need to revisit it in the Steam era.
Well deserved I don't get to play games much anymore, but I went out of my way to get it. Haven't played other games really in the genre, so it took a second to learn but it is so much more fun for it, I find at least. It makes fun stories too from a loses as well, where I made a society that after a child death became so depressed they continuously just made enough food and wine to survive, to only worship their god all day. If I took away the church they just sat around and were too depressed to do anything else.(I still don't understand how this happened and won't be able to reproduce my society of drunk and depressed monks)
Once again, how does getting a Dice Award = succeeding? There a lot awards out there can be bought or are even an outright a scam. What makes this award meaningful.
Dice awards are somewhat like the academy awards for games.
It’s more that they (DF creators) are hitting several successes after years of building a project many people love or admire and having a following but for the most part falling under the radar. Now they are getting a lot of main stream recognition and that’s important for people who are aware of the work they’ve put in. It’s inspirational to see something that is a passion project get recognized after so long
i fell into it almost 10 years ago and went deep..adamantine deep...to the point where i began questioning where my life was going spending hours a day micro managing groups of pixels settled upon the edges of volcanos, carving endless legends into the walls of my pristine and symmetrical holes in the levels of z. losing sleep to the point of falling asleep at my desk at work, the calming guitar loop burned into my brain still to this day, i had to quit...it is the best gaming experience I've had in my almost 40 years of life, and I so badly want to fall back in, but life has a tendency to get in the way of fun, and losing at life is not near as entertaining.
Another great game along similar veins, is RimWorld. It's easier to get into and figure out, while still having some complex gameplay. Nearly everything is customizable and they have a ton of user created mods to change even more. They call it a story generator game.
If you find the premise of Dwarf Fortress cool, but the gameplay a bit of a turn off/drudgery, try RimWorld.
