This is ridiculous. I remember a few years ago when Reddit's traffic surpassed Facebook's for the first time ever, everybody was super hyped. But I think these websites are all the same after all. Reddit also does some other shady tactics to force users to use their app (which has telemetry, obviously). For instance, you can't see your messages on mobile. Even if you request the desktop website, Reddit still makes sure that your chats box is unscrollable and a pain to use, so that you switch to their app.
