Why do we want to "normalise" or "encourage" discussion around gender on a source control platform?

I can't see it as anything but an utterly pointless waste of time.

Great news, it's good to see this become more widely adopted across sites that handle identity.
My gender is icecream gender, and I wish they would allow me to use 'Ice/Icem' as a pronoun.
