Ask HN: How to make the most out of my break from work?

3 points by metabro ↗ HN
I have a 4 month break from my big tech co. My focus will be on spending it with my kids and wife.

However, I also want to take it as an opportunity to work on myself and come back stronger. 2022 was pretty stressful and I was getting burnt out.

I can’t remember the last time I had this much time off and the thought of this being the last long break before I retire is scary and is making me anxious that I won’t make the most of it.

Any tips and suggestions to make the most of it would help me.

Some context about me that might be helpful: I’m in my 30s. Deep in child rearing stage of life. Live in the Bay Area and have very little to no friends in the area. Have an infant now that limits very long travel.

I think you would do well to make some friends in the bay area.
I’m relatively new to the area and work and family is where my time has been spent. Now that I don’t have to work for a few months I have time to spare. Any suggestions in how to meet friends , particularly here?
Going out to places where there would be people who share my interests and partaking in the festivities has always worked for me and I am borderline misanthrope.
- take a week or two to see everything as a tourist, do the things you usually don't do as a resident

- find friends, probably through a hobby or some kind of volunteering, ...

Damn, I could benefit from a 4 month break. Best of luck and enjoy!
